If you are a producer accessing this page to budget for an upcoming production, please note:

1) The Equity/ITC Agreement makes clear performers and stage managers are regarded as workers / employees under the Employment Rights Act 1996. This is the typical status they hold on theatrical engagements even when self-employed for tax and national insurance purposes and even if designated in a contract as a ‘freelance contractor. The employment status gives important statutory rights and protections, including the right to paid holiday/holiday pay in lieu for which you will need to ensure you budget accordingly for, the right to pension enrolment (where eligible) for which you will need to budget accordingly, and health and safety protections under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Working Time Regulations 1998. If you have a query about employment status, please contact us on pmpp@equity.org.uk

2) We can explore placing the individual production or all productions under an Equity Fringe/House Agreement which provides fair and decent terms and conditions of work that help productions to flourish, and, when adhered to, ensures producers protect themselves from serious liabilities. Find out more

Agreements and Documents

Rates are negotiated on an individual basis. Publicly funded projects are generally expected to meet industry standard rates, typically ITC rates of pay.

The Equity Fringe Agreement sets dignified terms and conditions for performers and stage management on fringe productions, which are typically smaller scale productions in venues with lower seating capacities than commercial or subsidised theatres. Equity negotiates these agreements on a per-production basis, particularly in relation to pay, to reflect the different circumstances under which a production takes place. By signing up and adhering to the agreement, producers can ensure that their engagements are employment law compliant and can avoid legal liabilities and complications that can come with breaching employment law. In addition, it gives the best chance for productions to thrive by setting fair and dignified conditions for workers.

If you are producing a fringe production and would like to use an agreement, please visit the Resources for Engagers and Producers with small budgets page of the Equity website for more information and to get in contact about putting on a production under a fringe agreement.

Voice over – recommended minimum rates

The following information details minimum rates recommended by Equity in the absence of collectively bargained agreements. These rates are intended for use on AAA Games (Games that are created and released typically by mid-size or major publishers; usually anything that cannot be classified as “indie.”)

The rates are recommended minimum fees and are negotiable between a performer (or their agent) and the engager. We encourage AAA, indie and low budget productions to contact Equity to discuss these rates and other contractual arrangements.

Ratecards: find out the rates for the work you do

With the exception of rates for our theatre members which are determined by the collective bargaining agreements with the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and UK Theatre (formerly the Theatrical Management Association), the information here reflects the recommended going rates set by the relevant freelance branch(es), covering film and independent production, after consultation with members. Bectu also recommends minimum terms and conditions for all those not covered by an agreement.
